8 Tips for Your First Pole Class

I know how nervous I was to come to my first pole class a few years ago…

I had a friend who took pole classes and showed me a fireman spin once, but coming to a studio to take an actual pole class was intimidating! For me, it was definitely fear of sensual movement!

Here are some common concerns we often hear…

I’m not a dancer, I’m not strong enough, I’m not “sexy”.

But all of these concerns are the exact same reasons why you should take a pole class!

So here are 8 tips to alleviate the unknowns and get you to click that “Sign Up” button…

  1. KNOW WHAT YOU’RE IN FOR…

Read the class description! This is where you will find important information like what you should bring, what you’ll be learning, and what skill level you should be at. Make sure the class is beginner friendly!

  2. WHAT NOT TO WEAR…

For pole class, the more skin you have the better your grip on the pole. Come in your regular workout gear to the door, but be ready to take it off! A sports bra, fitness shorts, and a tank top are great. Many studios have boutiques where you can buy shorts as well.

  3. LOSE THE LOTION, FRIEND…

It’s great to stay moisturized! But for pole dance, you may be too slick and slide right down to the floor. A good rule of thumb is to use lotion no closer to your class time than the evening before.

  4. SHOW UP EARLY…

Plan to arrive at the studio at least 10-15 minutes early, especially if you don’t know where the location is. Give yourself time to ask questions, find the restroom, and check in for your class.

  5. GET READY TO SWEAT

A great pole class will include a solid warm up to avoid injury, some conditioning to get you stronger, some new moves that will raise your heart rate, and a cool down to stretch those worked muscles.

  6. COMPARISON IS THE THIEF OF JOY…

This is the worst part of starting anything new and we all do it to some degree. You may have someone on the pole beside you who is in their fourth week of Intro to Pole and looking stellar while you think you look like an awkward baby deer learning to walk for the first time. It does you no good to compare yourself to anyone. In fact, here at PoleLaTeaz, we celebrate all body types, movement styles, and skill levels!

  7. RELAX! It’s ok to be NEW...

Give yourself permission to be a beginner! That’s why you’re taking class. Pole dancing, like any other skill, is a journey, not a destination. And if you fall down, my friend, it’s ok. I have fallen down many times!

  8. MAKE A CONNECTION…

As awkward as you may feel, you’re not alone! It doesn’t take much to make a connection. Be supportive and tell someone else they are doing an awesome job. They want to hear it just as much as you do! And maybe you’ll make a new best pole friend!
